Buckwheat is becoming more and more popular. It's showing up in many cocktail mixes and is the preferred crop of many beekeepers.

Buckwheat is a summer seeded cover crop. it grows very fast.

It as a very fine, fibrous root system. It's best known for it's ability to mineralize phosphorous from the soil. 

Buckwheat will die at first frost.
