Soil Sampling Basics
Before seeding anything it is best to take a soil test. This allows us to know what our levels are so we can give the seed the best start we can. There are two types of soil sampling procedures:
GPS/Grid- This option is for those of you who plan to variable rate your fertilizer. This is encouraged so you are putting the right rate on the right place.
Composite- This option gives you a place to start when it comes to your soil fertility. It is also more realistic when it's a smaller area.
Both options provide you with valuable information so you can make management decisions on that acre. Taking care of soil fertility leads to successful seedling establishment and prolonged life of the stand.
Once your sample is pulled, put the soil in a bag.
Choose your lab and look up their website to make sure they don't require any special instruction.
Also on their website, there will most likely be a submittal form to print out and send with the sample. This is how you indicate which tests you'd like to run and how to contact you with the results.
