The following is a strategy to plant Sweet Six BMR Sorghum Sudangrass after harvesting triticale:
Planting rate: 35-40 lbs/A
Plant at 65-degree soil temperature
Cut in mid to late boot stage
6-8” cutting height
50-65 lbs/A of N at planting
30 lbs/A of N after each cutting
Plant at ¾” – 1” deep in sand
Timing
Harvest triticale around May 15 and no-till Sweet Six into the stubble on 7-8” rows for a quick canopy.
Harvest Sweet Six around July 1 to 10.
Harvest 2nd cut Sweet Six around August 5-10.
Possibly harvest a 3rd cut of Sweet Six around Sept 1.
Then seed alfalfa in early September.
Sweet Six Details
Sweet Six is the fastest growing hybrid, highest forage quality sorghum sudangrass that we offer. BMR sorghum sudangrass works very well in the Midwest. This hybrid is a very quick growing dry stalk with high yields.
Sweet Six has been at the top 5% of several years of yield trials across the US. The higher leaf to stem ratio ensures a quality of grazing or feed that cattle prefer. The digestibility of this hybrid is increased by 20% due to the reduction in lignin. This reduction of lignin improves the digestibility of fiber.
Sweet Six has shown tremendous scores for NDFD, TDN, and IVTD. With the dry stalk trait, harvest delays related to drying can be avoided. This hybrid is best utilized for 1-3 cuttings or rotational grazing.
